Vaccinations against this dreaded virus are well underway. With the exception of our youngest, who is not old enough to receive the shots yet, my family has all had at least the first jab. I have never been so relieved to get a needle in my arm! We can do this!

We need to do this. So many have lost so much.

I look forward to the day the theaters open. It is very hard to be a theatre artist and a theatre professor and not be able to create live theatre.

Most of all, I look forward to hugging everyone I have had to be distant from for so long. If I see you, and you say you are fully vaccinated, do not be surprised if I give you a bear hug! (I may also burst into tears with relief, so just hand me a tissue!)

Barbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05977711518704494231noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9030417727998560993.post-40724802098182767102020-07-16T17:52:00.001-04:002020-07-16T17:52:56.018-04:00What is summer without theatre? I can barely remember the last time I had a summer that did not include theatre. College, graduate school, and most years since, summers have meant theatre in some of its most concentrated forms. There have been summers filled with musicals, or Shakespeare, or modern comedies and dramas, or some combination of all. I have done theatre on showboats, in heatwaves, during hurricane or tornado warnings, while seven months pregnant, inside and outside, with casts of two to thirty.
This summer, with theatre closures due to the pandemic, I am not racing to sit in a darkened theatre for tech or dress rehearsals. It is very weird, and oddly, I am getting less done this summer than I normally do. With no pressure to work around fittings and rehearsals, it feels like I have all the time in the world, and yet, my living room is still not stripped of its old paper, the dining room floors are still not refinished, and the bathroom still not repainted. But books have been read, and conversations had, marshmallows roasted over wood fires, wine sipped slowly in the warm evenings, and family dinners have lingered long after the food was consumed, so I would call this a success.

We have tended our sheep, hayed the fields, eaten fish caught from our pond, created paintings and collages, taken walks and had long talks. So much of this would have been bypassed with our normal frantic schedule. Do I miss creating amazing productions with my theatre family? Of course. I would have had five shows in two different theatres, but I would have missed the evening the boys and I went fishing in the Susquehanna, watching the sunset over the swirling water. I would have laughed with my actors friends, but perhaps missed hugging my youngest son as he navigated the first rough patch with his first real girlfriend.
Now, as one of our children heads off to law school in two weeks, we are happy for the gift of family time that COVID-19 has afforded us by forcing our schedules into a lower gear. With all the sadness and anxiety brought on in this dark time by this virus, we are grateful for the silver lining.

Be well, my friends.

Barbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05977711518704494231noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9030417727998560993.post-67625162515871957722020-05-08T22:22:00.000-04:002020-05-08T22:22:23.328-04:00It's been a long time!

It has been over a year since I wrote anything for this blog - too long, my dears, too long! The last year was filled with the second semester of the new job, writing grants, traveling to Italy to spend two incredible weeks in Commedia delle 'Arte workshops - clowning and mask making during the worst heatwave Europe had seen in a century, as well as having a glorious weekend in Genoa and Rapallo. I designed seven shows, mentored theses, designed and taught several new classes, and still managed to keep children, dogs, cat, chickens, and sheep alive. I am finishing my second year at Hartwick College, where I taught an intense Asian Theatre class in the three week J-term, and was knee deep in the Spring semester and show designs when the pandemic closures started. Switching to online learning has been both fun and frustrating but my students and colleagues are wonderful and have stepped up to the challenge.
We have been lucky that the immediate family is all together and healthy. The birth of lambs on the farm keep us busy and have been keeping our spirits up. Life is good.

So let's see if we can do a bullet point of the past year.
Can we talk about
gasoline? When I was a kid, there were
two kinds of gasoline that my father put in our car – regular, or regular that
he pumped himself. Oh yes, this was a
special money saving aspect of the gas station back then. Gas was a couple cents cheaper if you did it
yourself. However, there was still
always the option of letting the gas station attendant do it. Daddy would pump the gas on trips to the
hardware store or lumberyard, but if, for example, we were heading out to Long
Island to my grandparent’s for Thanksgiving, he let the attendant do it.

These men
fascinated me. When we drove into the
station, the car would roll over the long, black air hose, dinging the bell
somewhere in the repair bay, and we would sit and wait for the man in the grimy
uniform (with a name like Bob or Sam embroidered on the left breast pocket) to
come loping across to our car.

“Filler up?” he’d
ask, picking something unknown from his perpetually blackened fingernails.

“Yes, with regular”
Daddy would answer. What did we care
about unleaded gas – we were driving a Volkswagen bus – hardly a high-performance
car, but one that fit all seven family members with six of them getting window
seats.

When Sam (or Bob)
had checked the oil, washed the windows, and topped off the tank, Daddy would
hand him a credit card, and Sam (or Bob) would disappear into the depths of the
gas station, and we would wait for him to return with a little plastic tray
with the charge card and several pieces of tissue paper all held together. As
he’d pass the tray through the window, I could see the creases in his skin were
filled with grease as black as that in his fingernails. Daddy would sign the
papers, rip one off and keep it, and thank Bob or Sam who would look puzzled
for a minute, then say, “Oh, no, this is just Sam’s shirt – I’m Tommy.”

Where, oh, where
are Bob (or Sam or Tommy)? How I long to
see one of them with their grimy hands, as I pull into a gas station, dressed
for the theatre, wearing my expensive perfume and velvet skirt. But no, Sam or Bob or Tommy has departed
along with the other heroes of my childhood, Captain Kangaroo and Mr.
Rogers. So, after pumping the gas, and
washing the windows, I return to my car, no longer smelling of “Obsession” or “White Shoulders” but of
unleaded gasoline and windshield washer fluid.
I miss you Sam, Bob…

A key. That's it, yet it is a key that will lead to so much! My college campus has a beautiful greenhouse attached to the back of the science building. Every day I walk past it as I go to and from my car. Not a lot of plants are in it; some bromeliads, some ferns, and some geraniums. There are some random other plants - perhaps from faculty offices, trying to stay alive over winter? I never see anyone in this greenhouse, which has had the benches removed some time in the past due to asbestos, and never replaced. Hence the lack of activity. Still, it is light and warm and has windows that open, and water. And I now have a key. I have permission to use this greenhouse for my research, and I am thrilled. Giddy, one might say.
There is more to this than just growing some plants. Years ago, we lived in a beautiful house in Baltimore next to a not so beautiful house that had a GORGEOUS, yet abandoned, greenhouse on its property. I longed to get into that greenhouse. We even discussed buying the lot next door (the not so beautiful house was situated on a double lot) so we might have the extra land, and the greenhouse. Alas this was not to be. So, like a kid with their nose pressed against the toy store window, I would watch the greenhouse sit there with no one entering it, nor loving it. I watched its slow decay: ivy breaking through the windows and letting water to rot the floor, birds and rodents nesting in the office above the growing rooms, the furnace turning red with rust, the pipes green with patina...
Now, I work on a campus with an under-used greenhouse - there was a budget crunch after the renovations were begun on it, so they came to a halt. Since some of my research has to do with plants, I thought I would ask if I might have a small corner of the greenhouse to use. After all, what's the worst that could happen? A no? I'd be no worse off than before. I asked and got a yes! I am finally going to have a greenhouse. Not mine, shared with others, not perfect, but a greenhouse.
The other cool thing was the Chair of the Biology Department, with whom I have not had interaction since the first week of school, when my mind was reeling with dozens of new names and faces, remembered my name. It is a little thing, but it made me feel good. It is nice to be working on a small campus again.
So I am off to plant my indigo and woad, calendula and madder, lady's bedstraw and others. Expect to see me with dirt under my nails and a goofy smile on my face!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas. As we prepare for this special day, remember to reach out to each other. That smile at a stranger, or the little bit of help reaching something from a high shelf for a vertically challenged shopper has a huge and positive impact.
I am a person who hates shopping (ironic with the job I have) but I love going to the store the day or two before Christmas. Everyone is so helpful. We were in Walmart yesterday. I needed to get more vanilla extract and tee shirts. I went into the baking supply aisle - which was very crowded. I overheard a woman searching for condensed milk. Having just passed it, I told her where it was. Her husband saw me scanning the shelves, and asked what I was looking for, then told me the vanilla was back where I had just sent his wife. It is the little bits of communication that make this such a special time. The tiny moments, not the presents, are what we will remember.
Family, friends, and memories can help everyone have a better holiday season.
Wishing you all friendship, and love, and days of laughter, and moments of quiet.
So after putting the salmon skin in the tannin solution last Sunday, and taking it out yesterday (Sunday), I have learned a few things. First of all - I think I may have left it in the solution too long, as it is still stiff in places, even after working it. Second - acorn tannin makes the skins much darker than the Maiwa powdered tannin I learned with. The finished skin is dark brown, and very pretty, but it is very different from the burnt sienna of the Maiwa product. Third - I need to find some fishermen and have them save skins for me after they have filleted their catch. I love this process. I now have to decide what to do with the leather. The last thing I learned (AGAIN) is that I have a very tolerant family. The fish skin and tanning solution sat on the kitchen counter in a big bowl for a week, and they just worked around it. Fish in the bathroom? All heard was, "When will it be done so I can shower?" My husband and boys are kind of awesome.

Here is the rest of the process:
I may sand the back of the leather to even out the surface, and I may need to get a touch more scientific in the measuring of the tannins (I think my solution was quite strong) but leather was made and I am pleased with the result.

It really is the end of the season here for eco printing. I missed so much of the fall plants due to work, conferences, shows and such that I am somewhat desperately grabbing any leaves and flowers that are left. Here is one piece I have started using sumac and Japanese knotweed among others:
My show opens in two weeks, so I will have a little breathing time to decide what to make from the salmon leather. Next I will have to find a salmon skin supplier - perhaps a seafood restaurant somewhere?

Last month I was presenting at the Textile Society of America's Biennial Symposium, and I took a pre-symposium workshop. I did this because I was there alone, and walking into a symposium of over 400 people is daunting to me. I have discovered that starting in a working group or class ahead of a conference helps me make a few new friends to have lunch with or sit with on the bus, etc. It was also a really interesting workshop!

Headed by artist Rebecca Graham, we had a cadre of artists teaching us - three First Nations artists form differing tribes and traditions, as well as a Scotsman, Peter Ananin, a natural tanner, who carries on the fish leather tradition in Scotland. Rebecca had obtained a great number of skins from a friend who is a commercial chef who saves the skins in the freezer after she has filleted the fish for her meals. She showed us how to scrape off the bits of meat and the scales using nothing more that a spoon. She discussed the methods of tanning, and June and Charlie Pardue from Alaska's Alutiiq and Gwich'in tribes respectively added their methods. Peter uses tree bark for his tannin,

Charlie uses willow, and we discussed other "found in nature" sources. For the purpose of teaching consistency, Rebecca used powdered tannins from Maiwa. Aworkshop that is just 6 hours cannot allow you to actually tan the skin, so we did the "cooking show" version of tanning - Rebecca showed the process, but had some pre-soaked skins rady for use to do the final processing on. The skins must soak in the tannins between 2 to 5 days, so this made a lot of sense. At the end of the day, we all took home two pieces of salmon leather (the third strongest in the world after shark and something else) that we had worked ourselves.

So now I am going to try it without the aid of teachers and guides. I must start by getting my tannin solution, so I am boiling up nearly two pounds of acorns in my old crock pot. I rinsed them once to remove residual dirt and they have been boiling and getting drained and reboiled .
A few years ago, on a day trip with friends, we were at a swimming hole in the Hudson Valley, and my youngest son - about 3 or 4 at the time, stepped off the rocky shelf, and dropped down into the deep water. There were four adults standing next to him, but I was the only one with eyes specifically on him at that moment. He did not know how to swim yet, and he did not cry out - he just slipped under. I dove in (fully dressed, as a parent will do) and grabbed his hand, pulling him up before he had been able to swallow more than a mouthful of water. I shudder to think of what might have happened had my attention been diverted from him. Please read the following article to learn what drowning really looks like. It may save a life.
My youngest son is nearly done with finals, and thus school for the year. I always breathe a sigh of relief because it means I do not have to get up until 7 a.m. if I do not want to. (I will still probably get up at 6, but I do not HAVE to!)
Summer also means more time at the farm - for me and the kids. More time to make new friends like this:
Nearly three weeks ago there was a big storm in the state of CT. At first thought to be a tornado, it was later determined to be a macro burst. The small town of Brookfield, where I grew up, and where I still have family and friends, was hit hard. Trees down, houses and cars crushed, and massive damage to the infrastructure. My mom's house, the one I grew up in, lost a huge number of trees - five were completely uprooted, and twelve to fifteen were snapped with pieces landing across the yard, or through the roof.
The start of the pile of branches at the edge of the road where the town said to pile debris for pick up. Today the professional crew with the trucks and the excavator and the BIG chain saw will be there to take down or trim the broken trees, move the trunks, dig out and break up the root balls, etc. The lawn will need some landscaping after the heavy equipment is removed, but that's easy.

As far as farming goes, we are still newbies. Every year some challenge pops up that we did not anticipate, and this year is no different. We suffered a couple of heart breaking losses - our ewe, Maxine, disappeared in early winter (that's a whole other story, you've probably heard) and earlier in the fall, we had to put down our beautiful Arwen.
After a plethora of lambs last year, we decided not to breed all our ewes this year, just a select few. Well, Nature, and a randy ram lamb had other ideas. We do not wean our lambs by separating them at the time we think they should leave their dams, but let the dams tell the babies when time is up. It is less stressful for them both, we think. Anyway, apparently one little guy became sexually active a touch early, and lo and behold, we had a ewe we had not bred, now pregnant.
This past Tuesday, Rosie gave birth to quadruplets. A brown ram, a white ewe, then a pair of black lambs, one ewe, one ram. Our son decided to name them Romeo,
We took her into the house, as she had cold mouth, and was not sucking, and her body temp was way too low. We got some fluids into her with a stomach tube, flushed out the other end, and spent a day and a half, trying to help her regulate her temp and live. Alas, this was not to be. Sometimes, Nature just does it's own thing.
It is part of farming, and the boys understand, but it is so much better when they make it!
Now you might think, with a title like that, that this is about meeting up with people I have not seen in a while. You are right, to a degree. This past year has been filled with visits and talks with old friends; students who graduated years ago, teachers from my own school days, people I grew up with. However, I am referring to friends I have made through books. This is the time of year I pull out some of my well-loved books and revisit the friends there.
I just finished Daddy-Long_Legs, written in 1912 by Jean Webster, and Judy Abbott is just as lovely and sweet today as she was when I first read it at age 12. I love revisiting books I have known since childhood because we often read just "the story" as a child and then as an adult, we appreciate the witticisms, the social commentary, and the allegory that was over our heads when we first turned their pages. The Chronicles of Narnia is my perfect example.
I hope you, too, have some time to visit some old friends in between the caroling and the snow ball fights!
This year we may be light on lambs, or swimming in them. We usually put breeding groups together at the end of November, beginning of December. This year as we were plotting who should go with whom to try for which genetic traits, which possible fleece colour outcomes, we stopped and too a good hard look at a couple of our girls - they seemed a big too large for this time of year. My son described one of our older ewes as looking a bit like an eggplant, and indeed, she does. We now suspect (and it is just that as we cannot afford ultrasounds for sheep) that possibly four or five of our girls might be pregnant.
How does this happen when we keep the rams and the ewes in separate enclosures, you ask? Well...we may have left the ram lambs in with the ewe lambs a bit too long...maybe. Rather than forcing weaning, we have always let the ewes wean the lambs. They do a pretty good job of letting the babies know when enough is enough. However, we may not have gotten the message. Finn rams are sexually mature at 4 - 8 months. It is very possible we had an early bloomer or two, and now may have lambs in February! These will be wonderful as a spinner's flock, to increase the prolificacy of a flock, but we will not be able to register them as we have no idea who the sire is.
sigh. It has been that kind of a sheep year, so why not have one more lesson learned before the year's end? Soooo, yesterday we put the one white ewe with the best fleece together with our older white ram, and we are hoping for a May lambing from her. We may put our light brown ewe together with a young light brown piebald ram to try to continue that colour in the flock. Beyond that - we may be done. Keep ya posted about the others!
As many of you know, one of our ewes went missing. Maxine is big, and brown, and sweet. She has not been found, so we are not hopeful. I have followed several leads which found me trolling the streets of a village some 15 - 20 miles from our farm on the tip that a brown sheep was roaming the streets there. No luck. After more photographic evidence appeared, I could see that the markings were wrong and it was not our sheep.
This weekend we started coordinating the lists for breeding groups. This is when we really took notice of some inconsistencies in the udders on one of our other first group of sheep, a ewe named Arwen. She is a big, beautiful white ewe who has given us three generations of lovely white lambs. She was skittish to start with, and had a tough time settling into motherhood on her first lambing, but has been very attentive and giving us strong lambs, ever since. Last season she gave us our first quadruplets - all white, and all did well. It appears, however, that she developed a form of sub-clinical mastitis - an infection in the udders. It can return, spread to others in the flock, so we will have to cull her.
I am not very good at this part of farming. The selling, the culling; nope, not good at all. However, we cannot have infection in the flock, so if a chronic condition develops, this is the answer. So breeding lists will have to be re-worked, and we will have to say goodbye to another friend. Next year will mean selling at least one of our original rams, as we need to introduce new genetics to the flock, and I am steeling myself for that by talking about it early.

Halloween has never been my favorite holiday. I loved it as a kid, of course, but had no real attachment as an adult. Until I had children. While a bit of a busman's holiday, making costumes for my children for Halloween has always been a joy. I spend far too much to create costumes they will wear for a few hours, but they love it and so do I.
This year, my son wanted to be Captain Jack Sparrow. Okay, but I was determined NOT to spend a bunch of money on this one. He had pants that would work, and I had a poet shirt from my grad school days (don't ask me why - I have no idea!), a vest was easy from the remnant of some random upholstery fabric, as was the sash and the head wrap. Bought new rain boots in brown, as he had outgrown his old ones, and just made felt cuffs for them. Easy Peasy. The tricky parts? Wig, mustache and tricorn hat. I had a hat from my college days that looks like something Zorro might wear (again - no idea why),

and I have not even had the thing on my head in 20 years, so a few quick pinches and I bent the brim into a tricorn. Problem 1 solved.
I started to ventilate a beard - far too late, as this takes a bit of time an patience and I am out of practice. I stared at so many photos of Johnny Depp my eyes were crossing before I thought of the obvious solution - chunky yarn. Captain Jack has awful hair - dirty, dreadlocks, tangles and braids. Yarn would do quite well. So a quick machine stitching of two tones of brown yarn, and some beads and braids and we had a wig, and a mustache. Problems solved. Trick or treating would happen before the Halloween parade, and before I got off of work, so it was up to my darling husband to apply the facial hair and makeup. Final results were good, and the child won Best Character costume in the band's costume competition. Another year, another costume. Next year? Who knows?
I went to the farm to water/feed animals and got four eggs from four chickens! Yeah! Found one ram lamb completely tangled in the electro-netting - which had snapped a wire so he was not getting zapped, but his leg was so wrapped up that it took 15 minutes to get him free. I sent my son to car to grab my knife - he returned 15 minutes later - he had sat on two of the eggs in the van, then tried to clean it up by hosing the inside of the vehicle (the carpeted floor, the fabric seats- you get the picture?) and still came back with no knife. But, the ram was freed, the netting set up as a physical if not electric barrier, so, no harm no foul. We had no rags, nor paper towels in the barn, so I cleaned the remaining egg goo from the seat with disinfecting hand wipes - several of them!
My third show of the summer is completed. My syllabi are done. I know have about 6 hours that are not appointed to something else, so I am going to try to tan my first sheepskin. The lamb was injured, so we sent him to the abattoir rather than have him become supper for the coyotes. We asked for his hide back, and salted it well, folded it and put it in a plastic bag to hold it until Spring. And of course now that it is the end of August, I finally have the time to start the process.
I unfolded the hide, and it was a bit stiff and pretty dry, so I ran the hose over it to rinse off the salt and soften things up before trying to remove some of the fat. Although last year I purchased a fleshing knife - I put it somewhere safe - I cannot find it, so I grabbed one of the Cutco knives from the kitchen and used that to help remove the effluvium.
Next I mixed two pounds of salt and a cup of oxalic acid in a large plastic storage bin, mixed it up and submerged the hide. For the next three days, it will soak with the occasional stir, and then be washed and softened. More about that as it happens
The best friend and worst enemy of the farmer is the weather. We pray for rain, long for dry weather, hope the rains hold off in time for hay to be cut and gathered. It's a complicated farucca with tempo shifts and changing moves, this dance of the farmer and the weather.
Thus is was with us last week. We were late getting the hay cut this year, as we had been out of the country, and the rain came daily upon our return. We finally got a break, and got some of the pasture cut, then we got the hay rake hooked up to our old Ford tractor, only to have the tractor randomly stall and need half an hour to cool off before starting up again.
The next day we were ready to bale. Ancient bailer hooked up - check. Knotter working - check. gas in the tractor - check, check. My husband started bailing, and it clogged - our wind rows were too wide. So we raked them out into thinner rows and started again.
Aa-aa-nd the tractor stalled. We needed to wait until the following day to try again.
Things started to go well, then another issue. This is when things started to change. Other farmers are your bullpen in tricky times, or so we have found. A friend (the gentleman who helped to build the barn) just stopped by because he was in town, and he and my husband greased the bailer and suddenly it worked. Another friend - the one who created our pond on the farm - also just popped by. We were all watching the thunder clouds rolling in, so once the bailer started working, we were all throwing bales into the back of our truck, and Brian's truck, and Tom's truck and getting them down the hill to the barn. Still, there was a lot of un-baled hay when the PTO on the baler broke. Without this part intact, no baling happens. Our ancient tractor has parts that cannot always be picked up easily at the Tractor Supply Store, so we had to come up with some other way to get the remaining hay in. Call to the bullpen.
A neighboring farmer, whom we had never met, but wave to daily as he drives past with his huge newer tractor and round baler, happened past, and my husband flagged him down. He pulled in and after some "getting to know you chat", mostly about equipment, he agreed to get his "baling guy" to swing by at the end of the day and bale up the rest of the field. No charge, no trade, just a neighbor helping out a neighbor. So we had four round bales in the field that evening, and managed to get them in the barn before the rain came.
If you want to make friends, buy a farm. Seriously, when the chips are down, farmers have your back.
Forever ago was the last time I had a minute to put up a blog post. We are now in June of 2017, and the weather still feels like early Spring in most places. Things have greened up, but it is prudent to keep a jacket handy.
We have been knee deep in sheep, as we intentionally bred our ewes later last year so births would happen in late April and early May rather than march and early April. DUMB! We had lambs being born during our show opening, during rehearsals for another show, during finals at the college: not helpful. next year we go back to our earlier schedule! We had a rough go of things - twenty lambs are currently frolicking in the fields, but of three pair of triplets, born, there are only two of each grouping that lived. One set had the remaining two needing lots of extra care. The ram lamb from that group is now huge, but his sister is still tiny and a bottle lamb. She comes running to the gate when we arrive, and will follow us around the barn when we let her out. We were lucky enough to have our first quadruplets, and our first quintuplets born on the farm from our seasoned mothers. They are all adorable, but as there are so many of them, we are supplementing them with bottles as well.
Today we had perfect weather, and after finally getting the septic guys out to locate the drainage field, I was able to plant a tree near the farm house. I grew up with weeping willows in our yard, and in our neighborhood, and I love them. So now that I knew where to avoid planting, I was able to buy a weeping willow and put it in the ground. Now the farm seems like home. I look forward to the tree shading the house, and giving another generation of children a place to climb, play, read, and dream.

Solstice. Winter. Yule.

What do you call it? The longest darkness, the beginning of the return of the light. A pattern evolves for us at this time of year for family and farm. We snuggle in at home - less outside time, lots of layers, fireplace, candles - all quiet since Spring gave us a long respite. The cold and the dark make the house a cozy haven with more chess playing, more books, and baking.
The farm means frosty breath clouds over the heads of the sheep, snow on the llama's back and rime around his mouth. Rushed chores, wet gloves as buckets slosh. The whoosh of hay being thrown from the loft to the feeders below and the quiet sounds of contented animals safely enclosed in their winter pens give a sense of accomplishment and our own moment of peace.

A poem for solstice, (copied and pasted from someone else's blog) for your reading pleasure:

<div class="entry-content" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #373737; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 1.625em 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us – listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.

<span style="background-color: black; color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> This is turning out to be a typical week. As I type this there is a pair of socks on the computer table next to me. My husband's? My son's? Hard to tell these days. I am guessing they are my husband's and he put them down while making an early morning call to a second vet, trying to find <span style="background-color: black; font-family: "palatino linotype" , "book antiqua" , "palatino" , serif;">Banamine, an anti-inflammatory drug to give to our llama. We are out of luck. Apparently it is on back order with the drug companies, so NO ONE has it. And we need it. This is our second llama to be stricken with meningeal worms. Our farm is wet, so we breed lots of snails which carry the larva and are ingested as the llama grazes. We lost a llama about a year and a half ago to this same worm. We need the drug to reduce the swelling in the spine so he can stop listing to starboard, leaning on walls to stay upright. But no go. So today I got several bottles of aspirin (remember aspirin?) so we can grind up ten to twelve at a time and feed it to the llama. I have molasses to try to cover the taste, and if that doesn't work, we have a medicine syringe, and we can squirt it down his throat. That should help the swelling, and hopefully the large doses of fenbendzadole will help kill any worms that have not already crossed the blood-brain barrier. Fingers crossed.
<span style="background-color: black; color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> With this in the background of our day, we also got news from one of our students that she was offered a contract to be a clown with Ringling Brothers. She is over the moon with joy, as she has wanted this, and worked for this for years. Her excitement is infectious, and the entire theatre department is thrilled for her. It feels good to see our students achieve their dreams!
<span style="background-color: black; color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Now, the evening meal will be eaten on tray tables in the living room as I have taken over the dining room table with my grading. I have papers and projects covering the entire surface. This weekend I will reward myself by starting to decorate for Christmas. We reflected with family members over Thanksgiving dinner about things we were thankful for. Family, and shelter, safety and nutrition were all up there. I spoke of being thankful that two recent deaths were able to bring so many friends and family together to celebrate lives well lived, and to reconnect with those of us remaining. We are so lucky.
Without being negative, so please do not comment so, I want to say how grateful I am to have been able to be an American citizen with these wonderful people in the White House. I do not care if you like or dislike their policies, the current First Family has given us lessons in poise, kindness, humility, and love.
